Tutorial: Soft-modding a PS2 Fat and installing games to the hard drive from a Mac or Linux PC

There are lots of options and instructions out there for setting up OPL and running games from a hard drive installed into a PS2 FAT, but many of them are old or recommend outdated tools, and almost all of them are dependent on using a Windows PC. As a Mac user I wanted a process I could do without access to Windows. This guide shows a path to a fully functioning PS2 with a hard drive that can be followed by Mac or Linux users. I'm focusing on Mac but the steps should be basically the same for Linux.

  • End result is a soft-modded PS2 and the ability to load ISOs onto it via a Mac or Linux PC

  • This guide never require booting into Windows or having access to a Windows PC. Where Windows software is unavoidable, I only use Windows software that runs simply and easily via WINE.

Limitations

There are several things many other guides will suggest that we can't do on a Mac:

  • There is no way I've been able to find to read/write to a PS2 formatted HDD over USB/SATA on a Mac. This rules out some popular tools like WinHIIP.

  • Because we won't be able to copy games over USB/SATA we'll need a good way to copy them to the PS2 over Ethernet. This means we NEED BOTH a working Ethernet port AND and a working hard drive in our PS2 at the same time. This is why I suggest modding an official network adapter to accept SATA drives. (You could also do everything in this guide with an unmodified network adapter and an IDE hard drive, but I wouldn't recommend it.)

  • We are limited to tools that work on Mac natively or via WINE. Many popular tools like HDLDump Helper GUI don't work correctly via WINE on Mac. (Though HDLDump Helper GUI may work on Linux.)

  • Install SATA network adapter mod and SATA HDD

  • Use uLaunchElf to format the hard drive

  • Install HDLGameInstaller on USB stick (I've had trouble running it from a memory card)

  • Install WINE on Mac

  • Run HDLGameInstaller on PS2 and HDLGManClient.exe on Mac (via WINE) to copy over games via network

  • Enjoy

What we need:
  • SATA adapter board for PS2 Network Adapter ~$18 with (slow) free shipping from China

  • Pre-made FreeMcBoot memory card ~ $8 on eBay

  • Fat PS2

  • Official PS2 Network Adapter (NOT a 3rd party SATA clone, we need working Ethernet)

  • SATA hard drive, up to 1TB

  • USB drive, any size

  • Philips and Torx T6 (star shaped) screw drivers.

  • An Ethernet cord

If you're considering following this guide, I'd suggest you go buy the SATA mod board right away. I can't find any current US sellers for it so you'll need to order it from China via AliExpress or eBay, so shipping is SLOOOOW. It took me about 4 weeks to receive mine. I've linked to the seller I used on AliExpress.

If you prefer not to buy a pre-made FreeMcBoot memory card it should be possible to set one up yourself (or skip it entirely) by imaging your HDD with FreeHDBoot, but that's currently outside the scope of this guide. At a minimum we need access to OpenPS2Loader and uLaunchElf, which should come preinstalled on any FCMB memory card.

Follow the instructions on the AliExpress order page to modify the network adapter. You'll need a Torx (star-shaped) T6 sized screw driver for part of this.

If you prefer a video, here's a decent overview of installing the mod. (Not my video.)

The main thing to be careful about is to make sure you use the ribbon cable that comes with the mod board, NOT the stock one from your network adapter. They have different orientations.

Ps2 Network Access Download

Here's what it will look like once completed

If you're using an IDE hard drive obviously you can skip this step.

Access

Plug in your hard drive and network adapter, and boot up your PS2 with your FCMB memory card inserted. Go into uLaunchElf and choose File Browser > MISC > HddManager. Press R1 to bring up the menu, then choose Format to format your HDD. (This will erase any existing data on the hard drive!)

(If you get an error while formatting you may need to update FreeMcBoot/uLaunchELF on your memory card. My card came with with uLaunchELF v4.43a with a July 2017 build date, which worked fine, but some older versions of v4.43a had a bug that caused formatting to fail. According to the update notes, any version from 6/18/2017 on should work. Alternately, pre-v4.43 versions like v4.42e_HDD should also work. Here's a link to the release thread for current versions of FreeMcBootin case you need to update.)

HDLGameInstaller setup

First, in order to run the HDLGameInstaller client on your Mac you'll need WINE. There are lots of ways to use WINE but here we'll just use the official package. Head to this page and download the installer for 'Wine Stable', and run the installer.

Next, head to the HDLGameInstaller support page and scroll to the bottom. Download the HDLGameInstaller + PC client. The current version as of 11/18/2018 is v0.819. Unzip the .7z file. (If you don't already have an app to open .7z files I recommend The Unarchiver)

Inside you'll find a folder labeled PC and a folder labeled PS2. Copy everything in the PS2 folder to your FAT formatted USB stick and stick it into your PS2. Save the contents of the PC folder somewhere on your Mac.

(It should be possible to install HDLGameInstaller onto your memory card but I wasn't able to get that working, probably because it's very large. It will not run when installed to the hard drive.)

Installing .iso games to your PS2

Connect your PS2 to your router/network via Ethernet. You may need a long Ethernet cable.

Boot up your PS2 with your hard drive and FCMB memory card installed. Open uLaunchElf and navigate to your USB drive (mass://). Select HDLGameInstaller.elf to run it. It should connect to your network and display your PS2s IP address at the top of the screen.

HDLGameInstaller.elf

HDLGameInstaller interface

On your Mac, double click on HDLGManClient.exe to run it. If it doesn't open with WINE automatically you may need to right click it and choose Open With > Wine Stable.

Download game mirror 16 pach [english] google drive. Enter your PS2's IP address in the Server IP address box, then click Connect.

To add a game click 'Install new game..' then click 'Add Game'. Choose 'Disc Image' and click Browse to select the iso you want to install.

You'll need to enter a Full Title as well as a shorter title in the 'OSD title line 1' box. (The second title isn't used in OPL but will appear if you use HDD OSD/Browser Updater v2.00, not covered in this guide.) Set the Disc type to CD or DVD, depending on the game. Then click OK.

Repeat the above step to add any additional games you like to your job list, then click Start to begin installing.

I've found most games install quickly and easily, with CD games installing in about 30-45 seconds and DVD games installing in 3-10 minutes. If you get an error try installing again, and make sure your Mac doesn't go into sleep mode while installing.

When you're done installing games, click Power Off to turn off your PS2 console.

HDLGameInstaller can also install games directly from DVD/CD. This is quite a bit slower than ripping the game on your Mac and copying it over but it can be useful if you don't have an optical drive for your Mac, or if you have trouble installing a particular ISO. Just launch HDLGameInstaller, then insert your disc, and choose Install Game from the menu by pressing the start button.

Running games

Download torrent battle ady lau. Power on your PS2 with your HDD and FCMB memory card installed, then select Open PS2 Loader (OPL) from the menu.

If this is your first time launching OPL you may need to change your OPL settings to make your HDD games visible. Choose Settings, then set 'HDD device start mode' to Auto and set Default Menu to HDD Games. Then choose OK, and Save Changes. Press circle to go to the games list.

You should now be able to select and run any game from your HDD!

Ps2 Network Access Disc Iso Download Game

If your Mac has an optical drive (or you have a USB CD/DVD drive) you can rip your existing games to .iso format pretty easily. The best tool for this is dd, a command line utility. This means you need to be at least a little bit familiar with the command line. Command line basics are outside the scope of this tutorial. This part is Mac specific.

Insert your game disc and open the Terminal. First we need to find the drive name for your CD/DVD drive:

diskutil list

You'll see a list of all the drives on your Mac and the partitions they contain. Look for the one that includes the game. It may help to run the above command once before inserting your disc and once afterward if you're not sure which is which. Here's what I see for my drive:

/dev/disk7 (internal, physical):

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: *2.9 GB disk7

The '/dev/disk7' part is the information we need. Now we need to unmount the disk before we can copy from it:

diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk7

Next we'll use dd to copy the disk to an iso file, like this:

dd if=/dev/disk7 of=SSX_Tricky.iso

It'll take some time to copy. When it's done you'll see a summary of the copy like this:

5668800+0 records in

UFC 3 Tips and Tricks Master your skills and performance inside the Octagon. Then fight to dominate the Octagon. Download game ea sport ufc 2. Multiplayer Mode New customizable multiplayer modes let you and your friends face off with highlight-reel knockouts. UFC 3 News and Updates Keep up to date on UFC 3 News as it’s shared.

5668800+0 records out

2902425600 bytes transferred in 480.875747 secs (6035708 bytes/sec)

..and you'll have an ISO you can copy to your PS2 using HDLGManClient.

In my case, since the disc is unmounted I need to use the command line to open my drive (since the eject icon won't appear in Finder when the drive is unmounted):

Extra Extra Credit: Converting games from .bin/.cue to .iso on a Mac

This is a bit more advanced since it requires installing a new command line utility, but it's been pretty useful to me.

You may find some games online (especially CD games) download as .bin/.cue files instead of an .iso. You can convert these on a Mac with a command line utility called bchunk.

To install bchunck you'll need to first install homebrew, which is a Mac command line package manager. Go here for download instructions.

Next install bchunck using homebrew:

brew install bchunk

Then navigate to the folder containing your .bin and .cue files and use bchunk to convert them using this command line syntax:

bchunk Input.bin Input.cue Output.iso

Ps2 Network Access Disc Iso Download Full

Once the files have been converted you can install the .iso normally via HDLGManClient

This is the best most trouble-free process I've found for installing games to my PS2 from my Mac. I haven't found any Mac-centric tutorials out there, or at least any that are even remotely up to date, so this was the product of trying pretty much every tool I could and seeing what worked. If there are any other Mac or Linux users out there who have other suggestions, let me know!

In particular I'd love to find a good way to download game artwork for OPL on my Mac. I can run OPL Manager 21.3 via Wine and it's able to connect to my console, but the artwork downloader doesn't seem to work. Each time I run it I get a message saying 'Operation is completed' but nothing is downloaded. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Failing that does anyone have a complete download of properly named artwork I could just FTP onto my PS2
